Mary Evans Picture Library One Millioneth Image

logo_200x60

Mary Evans Picture Library, the UK’s leading source for historical images, is delighted to announce that its one millioneth image has just gone online.

Somewhat appropriately it is an image of a “Coming of Age” cake that was displayed at the Bakers’ & Confectioners’ Exhibition which was held at the Agricultural Hall in London in 1913. The image comes from the Grenville Collins Postcard Collection which is exclusively represented by Mary Evans Picture Library. Grenville Collins himself was delighted that one of his images should mark this special moment.

Paul Brown, Managing Director of Mary Evans said “This is a real milestone for our online collection and is testament to the hard work of the staff to get so much content scanned from the original documents in the library. Producing high resolution scans from original material often hundreds of years old is certainly the best way to ensure clients have the best quality digital images for reproduction. Now onto the next million. There is certainly enough material for that and beyond.”

There is a new player in the world of genre fiction cover imagery; Novel Expression. Novelexpression.com offers thousands of fully released images created specifically for the genre fiction market, with an early emphasis on the Historical and Regency niches.

Founder Sheridan Stancliff of SheridanInk.com identified a gap in the marketplace while searching for stock photography for new releases for the authors in her stable. Calling upon her background in commercial photography, she enlisted photographer Chip Latshaw to lay a plan for creating an upscale agency with historically accurate costumes and professional models. Ellen Herbert of NEAT Production was brought on bringing production quality and a base of knowledge about the commercial stock photography.

Sheridan observes, “The idea for Novel Expression has been brewing for a couple of years and with the exploding self and electronic publishing markets, the time is right to address the unique needs of genre fiction authors. I’m excited to bring our imagery to the marketplace and can’t wait to see what wonderful covers are to be created.”

Sourcing costumes from Hollywood studios, casting from the deep well of talent in Los Angeles and working with top tier stylists, Sheridan brings her expertise in the fiction cover industry to craft images that inspire writers and readers alike.

Expansion plans include bringing on contributors. Chip Latshaw is creating guidelines for interested photographers, stating; “Ongoing education of our contributors will ensure a level of photography unsurpassed in our market. Our aim is to build a community of committed contributors with the end goal being the premier source of genre fiction imagery.”

Ellen Herbert adds, “Long a fan of niche collections, it is refreshing to be involved in an emerging market for stock photography. The basic rules of stock photography apply, but there are many nuances incorporated in the collection keeping in mind our core customer – authors, designers and publishers”.

Come be delighted by and transported to different eras and worlds with Novel Expression.

Mary Evans Picture Library Celebrates its 50th Anniversary

logo_top     Mary Evans Picture Library, the UK’s leading source for historical images, is delighted to announce that 2014 marks its 50th anniversary. It seems appropriate that a picture library so synonymous with history has reached its own landmark half century, and we look forward to spending this year taking pride in the fifty, fabulous years spent supplying the best and widest range of historical images possible to our clients.

The Mary Evans ‘Golden Jubilee’ is also an opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of Mary and Hilary Evans, who founded the library in 1964. Without their dedication and commitment to amassing their outstanding collection, the library would not exist today and it is testament to their vision that it remains one of the few remaining independents in the industry, drawing daily on that remarkable archive to fulfill requests from customers around the world.

So, to that end, the picture library is planning some very special events this year, including a series of open house parties actually at the library where guests can celebrate with staff while discovering the inner workings of the library and its fascinating collection. An anniversary book has also been produced which looks back over the past fifty years and includes personal anecdotes and little-known facts revealing a unique business like no other. Produced in a limited number, 50 Years of Mary Evans Picture Library will be exclusively given away at selected times and events through the year – it could even become a collectors’ item of the future!

If you are interested in going to one of the open days, and would like to be kept up to date with the Mary Evans anniversary year timetable, please email paul.brown@maryevans.com with ‘Open Day’ in the subject line. In the meantime, Mary Evans Picture Library would like to thank everyone who has been a part of their own fifty years of history and is already looking ahead to the next half century!
